French speaking Groove community : A new website / Un nouveau site Web pour la communiqué Groove francophone

The French speaking Groove community just released a new web site. The goal of this community is to allow french speaking users (in France but also in other countries such as Quebec, Switzerland, Belgium...etc) to share their experience, knowledge and feedbacks on Groove 2007 technologies.

A meeting is planned for september 25th at Paris. (Precise schedule to come later)

La Communauté Groove francophone vient de mettre en ligne un nouveau site web. Pour rappel, le rôle de ce groupe utilisateur lancé en février dernier lors des TechDays 2008 est de regrouper les utilisateurs francophones de Groove (en France mais également dans d'autres pays comme le Québec, la Suisse, la Belgique) afin de leur permettre de partager leurs expériences, leurs connaissances et retours sur les technologies Groove.

Une première date de rencontre est arrêtée pour le 25 septembre prochain.

Il y a quelques semaines, Hommes & Process a mis sur le marché un nouveau produit dans la gamme GrooveIT! : GrooveIT! pour Mes Calendriers. Ce produit offre la possibilité de bénéficier d'une vue unique et consolidée de plusieurs Calendriers Groove. L'utilisateur peut choisir les calendriers qu'il souhaite visualiser, choisir une couleur spécifique pour chaque calendrier, mais également, ajouter de nouvelles informations à un événement (comme le lieu géographique ou les participants) et bénéficier de rappels et de filtres.

Le mois de juin est incontestablement un mois riche en publication presse pour Groove. Après IT-PRO et Solutions&Logiciels, voici un article paru dans le Hors Série .NET numéro 12 de Programmez!

J'avais en effet rédigé il y a quelques semaines un article présentant les mécanismes permettant d'étendre les fonctionnalités de Groove, et plus précisemment focalisé sur l'API Web Services fournie par Groove.

Au delà d'une approche purement théorique, l'article est illustré par l'application de partage de post-il qui avait été développée lors des derniers TechDays.

De Carbon Grove à ... Carbon Groove

Ca s'écrit "Carbon Grove", avec un seul "O" ("Grove" = "bosquet" en anglais) ... non pas que je cherche à placer du "Groove" à toutes les sauces mais l'association d'idée entre Groove et la réduction des émissions de CO2 est pour le moins pertinente et adéquate.

De "Carbon Grove"...

Ce site à vocation éco-citoyenne propose à chaque internaute de venir planter un arbre virtuel. En contre partie de voir son arbre pousser de semaine en semaine, et évoluer au sein de la forêt (constituée par les arbres des autres internautes), l'internaute répond à un court questionnaire qui lui permet de comprendre comment il peut réduire l'émission de carbone par une modification simple de ses habitudes....

Feedback on Swiss SharePoint Club meeting / Retour sur la réunion du Club SharePoint Suisse

Comme mentionné dans un précédent posting, j'ai participé il y a quelques jours à une réunion de club SharePoint à Vevey en Suisse. Cette rencontre a été pour moi l'occasion de présenter Groove et sa complémentarité avec SharePoint durant la matinée, puis d'animer un atelier dédié à Groove durant tout l'après-midi : dans un format de discussions libres / questions-réponses, nous avons pu aborder Groove dans sa globalité : ses cas d'usages les plus typiques, son architecture, ses capacités d'extension, sa philosophie...etc.
Une séance très dynamique et enrichissante ! Merci à tous les participants !

Cette journée m'a également permis d'échanger avec Laurent Dieterich, fondateur et animateur de ce club.
Un grand merci à lui pour son accueil chaleureux !

As already said in a previous posting, I attended to a Swiss SharePoint Club meeting at Vevey in Switzerland few days ago. This meeting was for me an opportunity to demo Groove and explain its complementarities with SharePoint in the morning, but also to animate a Groove workshop during the afternoon. Based on an open discussion / Q-A spirit, we covered several topics related to Groove technologies : uses cases, architecture, extension capabilities, philosophy...etc
This discussion was really dynamic ! Thanks to all attendees !

During this day I also discussed with Laurent Dieterich, community's founder and main actor...

Formation Groove pour les partenaires Microsoft / Groove Training for Microsoft partners

During the last 2 days, I was at Paris, training Microsoft Partners on Groove technologies. This training was split in 2 parts : The first one was dedicated to sales people (Use Cases, Value-added, etc). The second one was dedicated to technical guys and more precisely designed to help attendees to prepare and get Groove 70-555 certification.

It was an opportunity for me to use my new "Groove Monster" demo laptop

A laptop running Win2008, Active Directory, SQL Server 2008 (*) and HyperV (**)
+ a VPC on Win2008 hosting Groove Audit/Manager Server and Groove Relay Server (***)
+ a VPC on Win2003 hosting Groove DataBridge Server
+ 2 VPC to simulate clients (1 Vista / 1 XP)

A great architecture to demo and explain the whole Groove architecture !

(*) Groove Server Manager is not supposed to run with SQL Server 2008
(**) Groove Servers on HyperV (or VMWare) at this stage are for demo/prototype usage only. Do not use virtualized Groove servers for production purposes.
(***) Groove Manager Server and Groove Relay Server as not supposed to be hosted on the same physical computer

Ces deux derniers jours, j'étais sur Paris pour former quelques partenaires Microsoft aux technologies Groove. Cette formation était décomposée en deux parties : La première était plutôt destinée aux personnes chargées des Ventes, puisqu'elle évoquait les usages de Groove, son positionnement par rapport aux autres produits Microsoft, et ses scénarios d'usages les plus pertinents / procurant le plus de valeur ajoutée. La seconde partie destinée à des personnes plus techniques avait pour vocation de préparer les participants au passage de la certification Groove 70-555.

Cette formation a été pour moi l'occasion d'inaugurer ma nouvelle "machine Monstre" dédiée à Groove

Un portable fonctionnant sous Win2008, hébergeant un Active Directory, une base SQL Server 2008(*) et HyperV(**)
+ une machine virtuelle sur Win2008 hébergeant un serveur de management et d'audit Groove et un serveur relais Groove (***)
+ une machine virtuelle sur Win2003 hébergeant un serveur DataBridge
+ deux machines virtuelles clientes (Vista et XP)

Une belle architecture pour faire des démos et expliquer l'architecture Groove dans sa globalité

(*) Le serveur de management Groove n'est pas supposé utiliser SQL Serveur 2008
(**) L'usage des serveurs Groove en virtualisation (HyperV ou VMWare) est pour le moment restreint à de la démonstration / prototypage. Ne pas utiliser des serveurs virtualisés en environnement de production pour le moment.
(***) Les serveurs de management et relais Groove ne sont pas supposer être utilisés sur une même machine physique.

Groove AND SharePoint - Swiss SharePoint Club / Groove ET SharePoint - Club SharePoint Suisse

Thursday, April 17th. Seattle WA. Last day of the MVP 2008 Global Summit...

Keynotes were presented by Toby Richards, MVP Program General Manager, Steve Ballmer, Chief Executive Officer, and Ray Ozzie, Chief Software Architect, at Microsoft Corp. Each presentation was followed by a set of Q/A. And this year the main topic was : Groove - SharePoint. Up to 5 MVP's questions were dedicated to the topic : Groove as offline client for SharePoint, Groove as a development platform for distributed applications, Groove with SharePoint, Groove without SharePoint, etc...

Extract from Ray Ozzie's presentation transcript :

QUESTION: Hi. Thank you. I really have a question about a product you actually might know pretty well, and that product is called Groove. Perhaps.
RAY OZZIE: I do know a little bit about that.
QUESTION: Now, there's another product within Microsoft that's been pretty successful in the last year called SharePoint. (Cheers.)
My question is -- yeah, SharePoint. My question is, is Groove the future UI for SharePoint, because that would be just -- when you talk about your software as a service and talk about exposing services in new ways and in new UIs, there's a lot of overlap there? It seems like Groove really ought to be the way to leverage SharePoint on the desktop. (Applause.)
RAY OZZIE: The word that you said, "overlap," I like to think of as complementary. (Laughter.)
You asked if Groove is the future UI of SharePoint. I might ask the same thing, is SharePoint the future UI of Groove.
Groove is really, really specialized and does a really great job in terms of dynamic collaboration between individuals. That is the design center. It just executes that extremely well.
SharePoint is a great thing at the center in terms of a place -- it's kind of the new file system, the new age file system where we had file shares before; now we're posting them and kind of up-leveling the conversation that happens around those things in the repository.
They are very, very complementary, and you will see in 14 and beyond increasing association with the things that you can do in SharePoint, and the things that you can do with Groove and the client, increasing levels of connections, both specific functions of the UI that are designed to work seamlessly with one another, increasingly the semantics underneath being brought together and so on.
So, it's a good observation, and, yes, that is the strategy.

QUESTION: First, thanks for this. At your presentation in Bombay last year in November, I followed up your keynote with a presentation of Groove. I think, as anyone observed, the people who were most excited were actually Microsoft people themselves. So I have both a suggestion, as well as a question. The suggestion is, please don't dilute Groove as a platform in its own right. It has a value not necessarily dependent on SharePoint or anything else.

Very often Groove is a much easier entry point into an organization. It's also a phenomenal platform on which to build real-world applications, and I'm talking of distributed ERP, point of sales systems, and a lot of things that benefit from the security, reliability, and the ease of use of Groove, which brings me to my question. What can we as MVPs do to vitalize Groove within Microsoft?
STEVE BALLMER: Well, Groove is an important product now. If you take a look at it I'd say probably the acquisition we did of Groove was one of the top five largest acquisitions the company has ever done. And, yet, I hear what you're saying. If everybody at Microsoft used Groove every day, maybe in every application I use Groove, but I'm not a daily user, I'm more of a weekly-type user than a daily-type user. I'll talk to Ray and we'll give it some thought, which probably would involve doing things for the bootstrap. People have their ways of working, to take one of our important internal applications, and improve it through the use of Groove, so I'll take that as a good suggestion and take it up.

I have my own opinion regarding Groove and SharePoint complementary : There's a full set of scenarii on which Groove and SharePoint take a real advantage to be used together. I often spend time during conferences on which I'm speaker, explaining these scenarii. It's a point on which both SharePoint users and Groove users have questions, need answers and concrete illustrations of value-added usages.

I wrote a short white paper on this topic about 1 year ago. I'm currently working on a more advanced version of this document but the first version can be downloaded there : Groove and SharePoint : The importance of common implementation.

More than the current integration between Groove and SharePoint, MVP Summit was also a good opportunity to have a look to the future. Without providing any confidential information, what I can say is that Groove 14 and SharePoint 14 will work together in a closer manner than today. while keeping the well know cross-organization secured P2P approach. Based on our requests, we can also hope to have GWAPI (the well known Groove API available in the first versions of Groove and used to develop custom applications based on Groove infrastructure) back in the future releases of Groove.

This Summit was a real opportunity for Groove MVPs and Groove community to demonstrate their enthusiasm and faith in this wonderful product : Groove....

And, having a look to articles published on Internet after the event, it was also a real good opportunity to create buzz around Groove !

Les Keynotes sont présentées par Toby Richards, MVP Program General Manager, Steve Ballmer, Chief Executive Officer, and Ray Ozzie, Chief Software Architect, chez Microsoft Corp. Chaque présentation est suivi d'une série de Questions / Réponses. Et cette année, incontestablement, le sujet de référence est Groove - SharePoint. Avec pas moins de 5 questions posées sur le sujet : Groove comme client offline de SharePoint, Groove comme plate-forme de développement d'applications distribuées, Groove avec SharePoint, Groove sans SharePoint...etc

J'ai mon propre avis sur la complémentarité entre Groove et SharePoint. Il existe en effet de scénarii d'usages où Groove et SharePoint offrent une réelle pertinence à être utilisés conjointement. Je prends souvent un moment lors des conférences que j'anime pour expliquer ces différents scénarii. C'est un sujet sur lequel les utilisateurs de SharePoint, tout comme les utilisateurs de Groove ont des questions et ont besoin de réponses concrètes, illustrées par une une réelle plus-value.

J'ai écrit il y a environ 1 an un court Livre Blanc sur ce sujet. Je suis en train de travailler sur une version plus approfondie, plus complète du sujet, mais la première version est d'ores et déjà disponible ici : Groove et SharePoint, L'intérêt d'une mise en oeuvre commune.

Plus que l'intégration actuelle de Groove et de SharePoint, le MVP Summit est également une bonne occasion de regarder ves le futur. Sans révéler des informations confidentielles, je peux d'ores et déjà dire que Groove14 et SharePoin14 fonctionnement de manière beaucoup plus proche que ce qui se fait actuellement, tout en conservant le fonctionnement connu et actuel de Groove à savoir le P2P sécurisé et inter-entreprises. Basé sur nos demandes, on peut également espérer voir le retour de GWAPI (API de développement d'applications distribuées basées sur l'infrastructure de Groove et qui était présente dans les premières versions du produit) dans les prochaines versions de Groove.

Le MVP Summit était une réelle opportunité pour la Communauté Groove et les MVPs Groove de démontrer leur enthousiasme et leur foi dans ce merveilleux produit qu'est Groove.

Au regard des articles publiés sur Internet depuis le semaine dernière, cet événement a également constitué une très bonne opportunité pour créer du Buzz autour de Groove !

MVP Summit 2008 à Seattle

Arrivé hier à Seattle pour assister au MVP Summit, grande conférence Microsoft annuelle, regroupant l'ensemble des MVP élus à travers le monde. Au programme, une semaine bien chargée, avec des sessions généralistes mais avec également des sessions dédiées aux produits. (Groove en ce qui me concerne donc).

A noter également la cloture de la semaine par des Keynotes de Ray Ozzie (Créateur de Groove).

De nombreux échanges sont sous NDA (Non-disclosure Agreement)... mais je pourrai certainement relayer ici quelques informations intéressantes dans les jours à venir.

De nouveaux MVP Groove

L'annonce est tombée le 1er avril dernier...

Comme à l'accoutumé, le programme MVP est actualisé tous les 3 mois. L'occasion de valider la reconduction annuelle de certains MVPs mais également d'intégrer de nouveaux élus dans la grande famille des MVPs.

Et pour cette fois-ci, nous comptons 4 nouveaux MVP Groove de plus...

Bienvenue donc à Aaron d'Australie, à Ashok d'Inde, rencontré il y a 3 ou 4 ans en France et à mon ami Jeroen des Pays Bas, connu pour être un fan de GrooveIT! pour Outlook et un grand amateur de bières ;-)

Et le 4ème élu n'est autre que Jean-Michel Davault, collègue et ami. Une récompense plus que méritée pour celui qui a amené Groove en France et avec qui je partage l'aventure Hommes & Process depuis maintenant près de 6 ans... Sincères félicitations à lui !

Usage de Groove pour des projets en équipes internationales

Comme vous le savez, Groove est particulièrement adapté pour les collaborations entre équipes géographiques distribuées, donc potentiellement internationales et donc parlant de multiples langues. A ce titre, Microsoft Groove 2007 supporte 28 langues(*) différentes.

Si ce fait est connu, il est néanmoins toujours amusant de constater les modifications de l'interface graphique dans une langue que l'on ne maitrise pas. Dans le cadre de mes collaborations, je suis en ce moment en contact avec une société russe... Voici un exemple de nommage d'outils pour le moins déconcertant...

(*) A titre indicatif, voici la liste des langages supportés dans Microsoft Groove 2007 : allemand, anglais, bulgare, croate, danois, espagnol, estonien, finnois, français, grec, hongrois, italien, japonais, letton, lituanien, néerlandais, norvégien, polonais, portugais - brésilien, portugais - européen, roumain, russe, serbe - latin, slovaque, slovène, suédois, tchèque, turc et ukrainien.

Ce titre pourrait prendre l'air d'un poisson d'avril en cette date du 1er, et pourtant...
Voici la surprise que j'ai eu en lançant sous Spock une recherche de contacts pour "Microsoft Groove".

Je me retrouve donc en 3ème position juste derrière Ray et Bill...
Je me demande bien comment se fait le tri ? Expérience ? Fonction ? Fortune personnelle ?
